English
This paper systematically examines the technical, economic, environmental, and social downsides of solar, wind, and hydropower—intermittency, land use, biodiversity impacts, waste and reservoir methane emissions, critical-mineral dependence, and storage costs. It argues these hidden costs are often overlooked in policy and investment decisions. It concludes that a sustainable transition needs a diversified portfolio, with geothermal as firm power.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Amid global pushes for rapid renewable build-out under ISSB/transition-plan disclosure, this paper adds a critical counterweight on hidden costs and firm-power needs. It is relevant to how companies frame credible transition plans and how policymakers weigh diversification versus single-technology bets.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Solar, wind, and hydropower are widely promoted as cornerstones of the global energy transition. However, a rigorous scientific examination reveals that these renewable sources, despite their well-known benefits, carry significant hidden costs and disadvantages that are frequently overlooked in policy and investment decisions. This paper systematically analyzes the technical, economic, environmental, and social challenges of each source. Key issues include: intermittency and dependence on weather conditions; vast land requirements; negative impacts on wildlife and biodiversity; waste management challenges for solar panels, wind turbine blades, and dam reservoirs; greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower reservoirs (particularly methane); displacement of human populations; reliance on critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt; and the high costs of energy storage. The paper concludes that a successful and sustainable energy transition requires a diversified portfolio, with geothermal energy serving as a reliable, firm power source that overcomes many inherent limitations of solar, wind, and hydro.
