English

This paper reports a drilling contractor's transformation from annual sustainability disclosure to an operational, AI-enabled emission management system. Based on a 2021 GHG baseline, operational control boundaries, and Net Zero 2050 commitment, the AI platform links activity, fuel consumption, and carbon intensity, enabling actual-vs-planned comparisons and multi-well benchmarking. The company achieved a 23% reduction in emissions intensity since 2021, advocating a control loop of measure, profile, diagnose, act, verify, and disclose.

In the global GX context

This case study aligns with global trends toward operationalizing climate disclosures (ISSB, CSRD) and using AI for decision-support. It provides a practical model for energy sector firms to move beyond reporting to actual emissions reduction, relevant for TCFD-aligned reporting and transition finance.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This paper presents a drilling company transformation from emissions reporting as an annual sustainability disclosure activity into a more operational, data-enabled management system for offshore drilling emissions. For a jack-up drilling contractor, the most material operational emissions are associated with diesel combustion used to power rig operations. The paper describes how a 2021 greenhouse gas baseline, operational-control boundary setting, climate governance, Scope 3 category screening, and the integration of emissions into enterprise management processes created the foundation for a Net Zero 2050 commitment and medium-term 2030 targets. The paper then focuses on how digital and technology implementation, particularly AI-enabled emission profiling, improves the ability to connect activity, fuel consumption, power demand, well profile, rig utilisation and carbon intensity. The AI platform is positioned not as a reporting tool alone, but as an operational decision-support layer that supports actual-versus-planned emission comparison, multi-well benchmarking, and identification of high-impact reduction opportunities. The journey shows that measurable decarbonization in drilling operations can be advanced through disciplined governance, better data, operational efficiency, automation, condition-based maintenance, client collaboration and a phased decarbonization roadmap. From the 2021 baseline, the drilling company has reported a 23% reduction in emissions intensity and improving reduction in absolute emissions despite fluctuating operating demand. The key observation is that decarbonization in offshore drilling should be operationalized through a control loop: measure, profile, diagnose, act, verify and disclose. The case study provides a practical model for drilling contractors seeking to align climate ambition with daily operating decisions, while recognising technology maturity, client-fuel boundaries, asset constraints and commercial viability as critical success factors.
