English
Survey of 103 urban Indian households finds uniformly high environmental responsibility but a persistent value-action gap. Awareness of India's BEE Star Rating strongly predicts energy-efficient appliance adoption (OR=3.445), while education and age do not. The authors argue for product-specific consumer education and structural fixes to upfront cost and recycling access rather than generic green campaigns.

In the global GX context
Adds Global South empirical evidence to the household energy-behaviour literature that underpins demand-side chapters of national decarbonization plans. The finding that label awareness, not education, drives adoption is directly relevant to EU energy-label reform and to ISSB/CSRD-adjacent consumer-facing disclosure debates on product-level energy information.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Rapid urbanisation and rising household electricity consumption in developing nations have intensified the urgency of transitioning toward sustainable energy practices. Despite widespread pro-environmental attitudes, a persistent value-action gap impedes meaningful behavioural change. This cross-sectional, survey-based study examined public awareness regarding electricity generation, appliance energy efficiency, renewable energy initiatives, and electronic waste management among urban Indian residents (n = 103, Mumbai Metropolitan Region). Employing an inferential quantitative framework comprising Pearson's Chi-square tests, multivariate logistic regression, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Spearman's rank-order correlation, we rigorously evaluated the structural predictors of sustainable energy behaviour. Results from the ANOVA revealed uniformly high intrinsic environmental responsibility across all educational strata (F(3,99) = 0.139, p = 0.936), establishing that general sentiment is not the limiting factor. Chi-square analysis demonstrated that awareness of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Star Rating system was strongly associated with active purchase consideration (x2 = 33.142, df = 3, p = 3.0×10⁻⁷) and, in turn, with actual adoption of energy-efficient appliances (x2 = 25.903, df = 9, p = 0.002). Logistic regression confirmed that Star Rating Awareness uniquely predicted energy-efficient appliance adoption (OR = 3.445, 95% CI [1.288, 9.220], p = 0.014), with the overall model demonstrating acceptable fit (Nagelkerke R² = 0.142, while formal education level and age were non-significant predictors. A non-significant Spearman correlation between bill-monitoring habits and mobile app adoption (rho = 0.093, p = 0.348) further indicated that digital energy management platforms can directly engage consumers without reliance on pre-existing analogue monitoring behaviours. The findings in the present work demonstrate that while intrinsic pro-environmental goodwill is uniformly high, accelerating household energy transitions in urban India requires shifting away from generic environmental campaigns toward targeted, product-specific consumer education and accessible structural infrastructure that addresses upfront cost barriers and formal recycling access.
