English

Generative AI is used to design lower-carbon buildings, yet standards like EN 15978 and RICS whole-life carbon exclude the energy used to train and run AI models. This concept note proposes Computational Carbon Accounting (CCA), which measures AI design energy, converts it via local grid carbon intensity, and reports it within the design-stage whole-life carbon assessment. It also tests whether AI-optimised design yields a net carbon benefit, outlining a measurement and case-study programme across Ghana, South Africa, and the UK.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Globally, TCFD/ISSB and CSRD push whole-life carbon and Scope 3 transparency, but computational emissions from AI tools remain an accounting blind spot. CCA offers a method to extend disclosure infrastructure to digital design processes, relevant to standards bodies, green certification schemes, and emerging-market grids.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Generative AI is increasingly used to design buildings, often to reduce their carbon footprint. Yet building carbon assessments such as EN 15978 and the RICS whole-life carbon standard exclude the energy used to train and run AI models. Research on AI energy use and research on building carbon have developed separately, leaving no method to account for the carbon cost of AI-assisted design. This concept note proposes the Computational Carbon Accounting (CCA) framework, which measures AI design energy use, converts it using local grid carbon intensity, and reports it in the design stage of a building's whole-life carbon assessment. It also tests whether an AI-optimised design delivers a net carbon benefit. A measurement and case-study programme is outlined across Ghana, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, reflecting contrasting electricity grids and relevant to standards bodies, green certification schemes, and Global South markets. The author welcomes collaboration with carbon assessors, design firms, AI tool developers, standards bodies and research funders.
