English
This study develops a screening-level framework to assess the hydrodynamic transport of fire-derived pollutants from floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems. Using a 3D model (EFDC+), it evaluates a worst-case fire scenario and finds rapid attenuation of pollutants via mixing, with concentrations below drinking-water guidelines, suggesting hydrodynamic processes effectively moderate impacts.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

Floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems have expanded rapidly as a land-efficient renewable energy option in regions facing land constraints. Their deployment on reservoirs and other water bodies introduces direct interactions between energy infrastructure and aquatic environments. Under accidental conditions, fire events may generate combustion-derived pollutants that are released directly into the receiving water system. These releases subsequently undergo hydrodynamic transport, dilution, and redistribution processes that control their environmental impact. This study develops a screening-level framework. It evaluates the hydrodynamic transport of fire-derived pollutants in FPV systems. The approach integrates conservative source-term estimation based on material inventories. It also includes AIoT-based combustion constraints and three-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling using EFDC+. The modeling framework resolves advective transport, turbulent mixing, and vertical exchange processes that govern pollutant dispersion in the receiving water body. A representative reservoir scenario is examined under a maximum credible fire condition to provide a conservative evaluation of environmental response. Results show that pollutant concentrations exhibit rapid attenuation in the near-field region due to mixing processes, followed by transient peaks and subsequent decline at receptor locations. The temporal evolution indicates that exposure is dominated by short-duration concentration pulses rather than sustained accumulation. Modeled concentrations remain below relevant drinking-water guideline values under the evaluated conditions. This suggests that hydrodynamic transport processes can effectively moderate pollutant propagation within the receiving system. The proposed approach provides a physically grounded basis for screening-level environmental assessment of pollutant releases in coupled energy–water systems where empirical data remain limited.
