English

Using panel data from 270 Chinese cities (2013-2022), this study shows carbon lock-in undermines urban ecological resilience, partly by reducing digital industry agglomeration. Industrial upgrading and carbon emissions trading mitigate the effect, and human capital exhibits a threshold beyond which the impact fades. Effects are stronger in inland, small/medium, and key environmental-protection cities.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Carbon lock-in is a central concept in global transition-finance and stranded-asset debates, and this paper links it to measurable ecological outcomes at city scale. It adds empirical evidence from China's emissions-trading and industrial-upgrading context, useful for comparative disclosure scholarship on how policy instruments offset lock-in.

📄 Abstract(原文)

ABSTRACT: Enhancing urban ecological resilience is essential for achieving sustainable development. However, the constraining effect of carbon lock-in has received little attention. Using panel data from 270 Chinese cities spanning 2013 to 2022, this study examines the impact of carbon lock-in on urban ecological resilience. The findings are as follows: (1) Carbon lock-in has a negative impact on urban ecological resilience; (2) Carbon lock-in undermines urban ecological resilience by reducing digital industry agglomeration; (3) Industrial structure upgrading and carbon-related rights trading can effectively mitigate the negative effects of carbon lock-in; (4) Human capital level exerts a threshold effect, whereby the negative impact of carbon lock-in becomes statistically insignificant once the threshold is exceeded. (5) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the negative effect is more pronounced in inland cities, small- and medium-sized cities, and key environmental protection cities. (6) Although carbon lock-in undermines local urban ecological resilience, it generates positive spatial spillover effect on neighboring cities. This study offers new insights into the negative effects of carbon lock-in and provides empirical evidence for enhancing urban ecological resilience.
