Using FAO data and five structural indicators (CRk, HHI, Theil, Gini, HTI), this study assesses spatial concentration and inequality in wood pellet production and consumption from 2012–2022. Markets expanded notably in Europe and East Asia with declining production concentration, yet consumption inequality persists. Brazil shows the highest growth among major producers. Findings inform renewable energy policy and fairer bioenergy trade.

In the global GX context
As global bioenergy demand rises under net-zero targets, this paper quantifies market concentration and trade inequality in wood pellets—relevant to EU/Asia biomass subsidy design, sustainable biomass sourcing rules, and just-transition debates in international bioenergy trade.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Densified biomass fuels, particularly wood pellets have emerged as strategic assets in the global low-carbon energy transition. This study conducts a multiscale assessment of spatial concentration and inequality in wood pellet production and consumption from 2012 to 2022 using FAO data and five structural indicators: Concentration Ratios (CR k ), Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI), Theil Entropy Index (E), Gini Coefficient (G), and Hall–Tideman Index (HTI). Results reveal significant market expansion, especially in Europe and East Asia, alongside declining production concentration. While CR k and HHI suggest growing diversification, G and HTI indicate persistent inequalities, particularly in national-level consumption. Brazil stands out with the highest growth rate among major producers. These findings offer robust evidence to guide renewable energy policies, promote fair international trade, and foster a more inclusive global bioeconomy.
