English
This study compares cradle-to-gate embodied carbon and settlement of eccentric isolated footings versus strap-connected footings for edge columns under eccentric loading. Across twelve eccentricity ratios, a transition near 0.08 emerges beyond which the strap-connected system becomes lower-carbon, achieving up to 35% less embodied carbon and ~50% less settlement. It offers a design-level framework for selecting foundations based on embodied-carbon considerations.

📄 Abstract(原文)
In dense urban environments, site boundary constraints frequently force edge columns to be supported on eccentrically loaded footings. While the structural behavior of such footings is well established, their embodied-carbon implications remain largely unexplored. This study compares the cradle-to-gate embodied carbon and settlement performance of two foundation arrangements for an eccentrically loaded edge column: an independently designed eccentric isolated footing and a strap-connected footing system. Twelve eccentricity ratios, ranging from 0 to 0.275, were analyzed using consistent structural, material, and geotechnical parameters. The results indicate a clear transition near ≈ 0.08, beyond which the strap-connected system becomes the lower-carbon alternative. At higher eccentricity ratios, the strap-connected system achieved up to 35% lower embodied carbon and approximately 50% lower settlement compared with the independently designed eccentric footing. The findings indicate that strap action can become environmentally beneficial when the carbon added by the strap beam is offset by the reduced material demand and improved serviceability of the edge footing. This study provides a design-level framework for selecting between eccentric isolated and strap-connected footings under embodied-carbon considerations.
