This paper compares renewable diesel fuels for railway diesel traction, assessing technical suitability of four alternatives: HVO paraffinic diesel, FAME biodiesel, 20% blend, and synthetic paraffinic diesel. It presents compliance with standards, fuel-system compatibility risks, storage and seasonal issues, and transition requirements. The study concludes that practical operating conditions—such as risk of fuel-system failures, storage difficulty, and maintenance needs—are decisive for fuel selection. A summary table serves as a practical tool for railway operators planning decarbonization on non-electrified sections.

In the global GX context
Globally, the paper contributes to the decarbonization of diesel rail traction, a segment often overlooked in transport transition studies. It provides a practical framework for fuel selection that can inform operators in the EU and beyond, aligning with the EU's Fit for 55 and the shift to renewable fuels. The comparative analysis supports transition planning for non-electrified rail corridors, relevant to ISSB-aligned disclosure of Scope 1 emissions reduction strategies.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of renewable diesel fuels. The aim of the study is to identify technically suitable classes of renewable diesel fuels for use in existing traction diesel engines and to systematize the constraints that determine the feasibility of their implementation. Four alternatives were considered: drop-in paraffinic diesel fuel produced by hydrotreating vegetable oils and fats, biodiesel based on fatty acid methyl esters, a biodiesel–diesel blend with a 20 % biocomponent share, and synthetic paraffinic diesel fuel. For each alternative, the technical application framework is presented, including compliance with standards, typical fuel-system compatibility risks, storage and seasonal suitability issues, as well as requirements for transition operations and fuel quality control. A summary table of requirements and constraints for each fuel type was compiled. The table can be used by railway operators as a practical tool for preliminary fuel selection and for planning the transition on non-electrified sections within the European Union–Lithuania–Ukraine corridor. The study shows that, for fuel selection in rail applications, the decisive factors are practical operating conditions: whether the risk of fuel-system failures increases, whether fuel storage becomes more difficult, and whether additional maintenance requirements arise. For fuels containing a biodiesel component, the main issues relate to storage and fuel cleanliness: water ingress can lead to biological contamination and sediment formation, which may clog filters and disrupt the operation of the fuel injection system. For paraffinic fuels, the main focus is on batch quality and on switching to a different fuel type: key fuel properties must be verified and the compatibility of seals, hoses, and gaskets in the fuel system of the existing fleet must be checked. As a practical outcome, it is determined that, during preparation for implementation, the following should be monitored at a minimum: the presence of water and contaminants, cold-weather operability and deposit formation, stability during storage, as well as parameters that affect the operation of the fuel system and filters. This summary makes it possible to discard options with a high risk of downtime and to establish a basis for further comparison of alternatives by environmental and economic indicators in phased decarbonization programs for diesel traction.
