Countries across the Global South face a tightening climate constraint that reshapes their development trajectories, demanding simultaneous progress on economic growth, social equity, and deep decarbonization. Emerging evidence shows that climate‑resilient development requires integrating long‑term mitigation pathways with near‑term adaptation strategies, while accounting for structural vulnerabilities such as energy poverty, exposure to climate extremes, and limited fiscal space. Recent analyses of national net‑zero pathways in large emerging economies highlight common transformation patterns: moderation of final energy demand, rapid substitution of fossil fuels with low‑GHG energy systems, and expansion of land‑use carbon sinks, all while preserving domestic socio‑economic priorities. At the same time, just‑transition research emphasizes that climate‑compatible development must confront distributional impacts, institutional capacity gaps, and the need for inclusive governance.
