English

This study proposes an integrated framework to assess bio-based carbon dioxide removal (bioCDR) pathways in Canada, combining literature analysis, stakeholder mapping, a geospatial decision-support tool, and PESTELB driver analysis. Pathways include BECCS, biochar, biomass burial, microalgae, afforestation/reforestation, wetland restoration, and long-lived wood products. Based on announced and planned projects, bioCDR could reach roughly 7 Mt CO2 per year by 2029.

In the global GX context

While focused on Canada, this paper's integrated framework for assessing bioCDR pathways—combining geospatial tools, stakeholder mapping, and PESTELB analysis—offers a transferable methodology for other nations developing negative-emissions strategies. It contributes to global discussions on CDR accounting and policy design under frameworks like the Paris Agreement.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Bio-based carbon dioxide removal (bioCDR) pathways are gaining recognition as scalable negative-emissions options within Canada’s climate goals. However, the lack of integrated data across policy, technical, and research domains constrain comprehensive assessment and effective strategic planning. This study proposes a systematic framework to characterize the potential of bioCDR pathways. The methodology combines literature analysis, stakeholder mapping, development of a geospatial decision-support tool, and PESTELB-based identification of key drivers. Selected pathways include bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), biochar, biomass burial, microalgae systems, afforestation/reforestation, wetland restoration, and long-lived wood products. A geospatial decision-support tool was developed to calculate and visualize biomass theoretical and technical potential, while incorporating infrastructure proximity to evaluate deployment feasibility. Stakeholder mapping highlighted spatial clustering patterns and identified opportunities for cross-sector collaboration. A PESTELB-based analysis examined the policy, economic, technological, social, environmental, and legal drivers shaping future deployment. A national inventory of carbon dioxide removal projects was compiled to evaluate current progress and future capacity. The results indicate that biomass-based carbon dioxide removal (bioCDR) could achieve approximately 7 Mt CO2 per year by 2029, based on currently announced and planned projects. This work provides an integrated foundation for evidence-based decision-making and supports the strategic planning and scaling of bioCDR technologies in Canada.
