Tidal stream power offers reliable, weather-independent generation that can complement variable solar and wind. Using least-cost capacity expansion modelling across major tidal resource regions, this study quantifies tidal stream's global system value. In wind-dominated systems, tidal stream cuts system costs by over 20% as carbon constraints tighten; in solar-influenced systems, reductions are generally under 15% but battery storage and land requirements fall substantially.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
As global disclosure frameworks (TCFD/ISSB) push for credible transition plans, this study quantifies a less-discussed renewable's system value, informing utilities and policymakers on portfolio diversification and grid planning. It adds evidence that tidal stream can reduce storage and land needs, relevant to material and spatial constraints in net-zero pathways.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Tidal stream power offers reliable, weather-independent generation that could complement the weather-driven variability of solar and power. Yet where, when and to what extent these characteristics translate into electricity system value remains unclear. Here we quantify the global system value of tidal stream energy using least-cost capacity expansion modelling across major tidal resource regions. In wind-dominated systems, tidal stream becomes increasingly valuable as carbon constraints tighten. System cost is reduced by more than 20\% in many cases, demonstrating that tidal stream's system value can far outweigh its capital and operating cost premiums relative to solar and wind. In solar-influenced systems, tidal stream provides more consistent cost reduction across the decarbonisation pathway, with cost reduction generally limited to less than 15\%. Results also demonstrate that tidal stream can substantially reduce battery storage and development area requirements, potentially alleviating material and spatial constraints in the transition to net-zero.
