English

This review maps two decades of research on artificial carbon materials (ACMs) for soil organic carbon sequestration using bibliometric analysis and mechanistic synthesis. ACM effects are time-dependent: early leaching and labile-carbon loss coexist with intermediate microbial and aggregate reorganization, while long-term persistence hinges on mineral association and aggregate turnover. Applicability varies with ACM class, soil mineralogy, pH/redox, moisture, feedstock, application rate, and disturbance, with multi-year field evidence scarce for hydrochar and artificial humic substances.

In the global GX context

Globally, soil carbon sequestration is increasingly linked to carbon markets, MRV frameworks, and corporate Scope 3 land-sector accounting. This review's emphasis on time-dependent persistence and context-dependency provides a cautionary scientific basis for crediting soil carbon removals under emerging disclosure and offset regimes.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and stability has attracted widespread attention because of its central role in the global carbon cycle. Declining SOC stocks in agroecosystems can impair soil fertility and crop productivity and weaken the soil carbon sink. Artificial carbon materials (ACMs) have been proposed as promising amendments for soil carbon sequestration and climate-change mitigation. However, existing studies have largely focused on changes in SOC stocks and greenhouse-gas emissions, whereas the physical, mineral-mediated, and microbial processes governing carbon persistence remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated. Moreover, the context-dependent performance of ACMs across diverse agroecosystems remains poorly understood. This review evaluates research trends and advances over the past two decades through bibliometric mapping and a critical synthesis of evidence concerning the effects of ACMs on SOC accumulation and mineralization, their underlying mechanisms, and their agricultural applicability. The central insight is that ACM effects are time dependent: early leaching and labile-carbon loss can coexist with intermediate microbial and aggregate reorganization, whereas longer-term persistence depends on mineral association and aggregate turnover. Applicability is constrained by ACM class, soil mineralogy and texture, pH/redox and moisture, feedstock and production conditions, application rate, disturbance, and the scarcity of multi-year field evidence for hydrochar and artificial humic substances.
