Electrically heated reforming enables low-steam reforming of CO2-rich methane over conventional Ni catalysts by minimizing radial temperature gradients. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculations show no carbon formation potential at S/C=1.2, CO2/CH4=1, 10 bar(g), and 1000°C outlet, unlike fired reforming. A non-promoted Ni catalyst operated stably for 14 h at 97.6% methane conversion with no carbon detected.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Ni catalysts in methane reforming are typically protected from carbon formation by operating with excess steam, catalyst promotion with alkaline metals and limiting the use of CO 2 -rich feeds such as biogas. We show that electrically heated reforming enables low-steam reforming of CO 2 -rich feeds by minimizing radial temperature gradients. For S/C = 1.2, CO 2 /CH 4 = 1, 10 bar(g), and T out = 1000 °C, combined thermodynamic and kinetic carbon potential calculations unflavoured carbon formation at any position in the electrically heated catalyst bed. Conversely, the fired-reformer reference exhibited a near-wall carbon-forming window between 20% and 45% of reactor length. Experimentally, a non-promoted Ni catalyst operated stably for 14 h at 97.6% methane conversion under these conditions. No carbon was detected within the analytical limit of CHNS elemental analysis or by post-test inspection. These results demonstrate low-steam reforming of CO 2 -rich methane over conventional Ni catalysts using electrically heated reforming, without carbon detected by the applied methods.
