English

This study provides an updated life cycle GHG emission benchmark for US coal-fired power plants, incorporating mining, transport, combustion, and waste management. Using EPA and EIA data, average emissions are around 1170 g CO2eq/kWh. Non-CO2 emissions alone can exceed the life cycle emissions of renewables, suggesting that coal with CCS may not achieve renewable-level low emissions.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Coal-fired electricity generates significant direct combustion emissions, but the full life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are less understood in the United States under current conditions. This analysis presents an updated benchmark to the life cycle GHG emissions of coal-fired electricity by coal power plant in the US. The analysis includes the impacts of mining and coal delivery; direct land use change from surface mining and power plant-associated infrastructure; power plant infrastructure construction; direct combustion emissions of CO2, N2O, and CH4; sulfur removal; and coal combustion residuals management, expressed as CO2 equivalents. Carbon dioxide emissions data was obtained from both the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Energy Information Administration (EIA), yielding two results for each facility. Using data from the EPA, the emissions of coal-fired electricity ranges from 910 to 1724 g CO2eq/kWh, with an average of 1175 g CO2eq/kWh. With EIA data, results range from 962 to 1690 and an average of 1163 g CO2eq/kWh. The life cycle GHG emissions results are higher than the current benchmark from harmonization of the coal life cycle assessment (LCA) literature. The direct CO2 emissions from combustion comprised 91% of the total impact on average, but other emissions contributed 4 to 28% to the total, with a range from 45.9 to 478 g CO2eq/kWh. The non-CO2 emissions alone are higher than the life cycle GHG emissions of renewables, indicating the importance of quantifying emissions from the other stages of the coal life cycle. This also suggests that electricity from coal with carbon capture would not necessarily reach the low emissions of renewables on a life cycle basis. These updated life cycle GHG emissions values can be used in GHG inventories and policymaking as well as in future LCAs that involve energy from coal in the US.
