📄 Abstract(原文)
Sub-Saharan Africa’s agricultural sector faces a dual crisis: intensifying climate variability and severe energy poverty. In Southwestern Nigeria, rainfed smallholder farming systems are increasingly vulnerable to erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, and rising fuel prices for conventional petrol- and diesel-powered water pumps. Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS) have emerged as a transformative clean energy technology with the potential to decouple agricultural production from fossil fuel dependency, enhance climate resilience, and improve rural livelihoods. However, empirical evidence regarding the socio-technical determinants of adoption and the rigorous causal impacts on farm performance remains fragmented. This study conducts an extensive empirical investigation using primary survey data collected across six Southwestern Nigerian states (Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos), sampling 1,240 smallholder horticultural and arable crop farming households. Utilizing a robust econometric framework, combining a Binary Probit Model, Propensity Score Matching (PSM), and an Endogenous Switching Regression (ESR) model to control for unobserved selection bias, we identify key drivers of SPIS adoption and quantify its economic impacts. Our findings reveal that access to agricultural credit, land tenure security, extension contact, cooperative membership, off-farm income, and local solar technical support significantly increase the likelihood of SPIS adoption. High initial capital cost and market information asymmetry remain primary structural bottlenecks. Econometric estimation demonstrates that SPIS adoption yields a statistically significant increase in crop yield per hectare (38.4%), net farm income (46.2%), household dietary diversity score (29.1%), and a 62.5% reduction in seasonal fuel expenditure. Furthermore, we explore the integration of Computer Science innovations, specifically IoT-based smart sensors, mobile algorithmic scheduling, and automated solar pump controllers, which optimize water application efficiency by 34% compared to uncalibrated solar flooding. We propose targeted strategic interventions, including Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) financing models, decentralized solar technical centers, and data-driven precision irrigation frameworks to scale sustainable agricultural intensification in Southwestern Nigeria.
