English
Australia's government is funding a domestic Low Carbon Liquid Fuels (LCLF) industry to boost fuel security and decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like long-haul transport, aviation, shipping, and remote mining/agriculture. Currently Australia mainly exports canola, tallow, and used cooking oil for overseas HEFA refining. This paper reviews national biomass feedstock supply data and pathways to expand supply to 2050 without harming food systems or environmental values.

In the global GX context
Adds to global transition-fuel scholarship by quantifying feedstock constraints for hard-to-abate sectors, relevant to ISSB/CSRD transition-plan disclosures and national decarbonization strategies. Offers a template for assessing biomass supply without food-fuel conflict.

📄 Abstract(原文)
As of 2026, the domestic bioenergy industry in Australia is relatively small by global standards, mostly made up of the use of sugarcane bagasse and forestry co-products for heat and power generation and biogas production from waste. However, the Australian Government has recently announced funding to support development of a domestic Low Carbon Liquid Fuels [LCLF] industry to boost fuel security and provide decarbonisation options for hard-to-abate industries like long distance haulage, aviation, shipping, and remote mining and agriculture operations. Currently Australia’s main contribution to global LCLF production is through the export of canola, tallow and used cooking oil for HEFA refining overseas. Developing a domestic LCLF industry will require significant expansion or redistribution biomass feedstock supplies. This paper discusses the findings of a recent national level review of the available information and data on biomass feedstock supply for low carbon fuels and the potential pathways to expand supply out to 2050 without degrading food systems or environmental values.
